The Emerald Tablet of Hermes
The Emerald Tablet of Hermes is an ancient one page Greek-Egyptian wisdom document likely written in Alexandria Egypt sometime between 331 B.C and 391 A.D.
On first reading, the document is mostly cryptic gibberish. If, however, you are a qigong practitioner and can actually feel the energy, you will come the the realization that the Emerald Tablet of Hermes is actually talking about chi energy… its source, its properties and ways of cultivating it.
Below is a hybrid translation of multiple sources as well as some of my own wording…
- That which is below is like that which is above, and that which is above is like that which is below.
- All things are adaptations of the one thing.
- Its father is the sun, its mother is the moon, the air is infused with it, the earth nurses it.
- It is the power behind every miraculous work in the whole world.
- Its power is perfect if it is converted into earth.
- Separate the earth from the fire and the subtle from the gross, softly and with great skill.
- It rises from earth to heaven and comes down again from heaven to earth, and thus acquires the power of the realities above and the realities below. In this way you will acquire the glory of the whole world, and all darkness will leave you.
- This is the power of all powers, for it conquers everything subtle and penetrates everything solid.
- Thus the human (microcosm) is created in the likeness of the universe (macrocosm).
- From this and in this way, marvelous applications are made.
- I am called Hermes Trismegistos because I posses the three parts of the wisdom of the whole world. (Body, Soul and Spirit)

When I combine this document with knowledge of how Taoists believe chi can be impregnated with characteristics of emotion and intention and categorize different types of chi as heaven energy or earth energy or solar or lunar energy; and astrologic and gnostic ideas of planetary and stellar energies, the following theory of chi emerges…
Chi energy is a subtle, non-obvious, form of energy emitted by the sun and stars. The energy emitted from these sources is not identical but varies from star to star. It is modified by its interaction with various cosmic bodies such as the earth, moon and planets.
Chi energy that has been modified by its interaction with the earth can be categorized as “Earth Energy.” Chi energy that has not been modified by interaction with the earth can be categorized as “Heaven Energy.” Heaven energy can be further sub-categorized as Solar, Lunar, Planetary or Stellar.
These energies, being slightly different from one another, have different effects on humans.
This energy is everywhere, ubiquitous. There is no place or thing that is without this energy. It is possible to become perceptive of this subtle energy. The primary exercise for gathering, refining and storing this energy within the body is the Taoist microcosmic orbit exercise.
Daily cultivation of this energy over the course of months or years can result in the attainment of spiritual states of conscious as well as liberation from the cycles of reincarnation. It can also result in the attainment of supernatural abilities such as healing and various psychic abilities.
