Destiny
Since about the age of forty I have come to believe in destiny. The major reason for coming to this belief is that during the course of my life up to that point, my fortunes had fluctuated to such extremes that it seemed more reasonable to believe there were spiritual forces in the background manipulating the events of my life than to believe that the fluctuations happened just by chance.
I had experienced periods in which everything I did was golden. Everything I did worked out great. I had also experienced periods in which no matter what I did I just could not get things to work out the way I wanted them too. Now could these down periods be due to persisting too much with a losing strategy or not persisting enough with a winning strategy or failing to vary strategies until I hit upon a winning one, absolutely. However the extremes were so extreme that it begged the question, “Are there unseen spiritual forces manipulating the events of my life?” The answer I personally came to was “yes.”
MECHANISM OF ACTION
One way in which spiritual forces influence the material world is by effecting the outcome of probabilistic events. For example when you flip a coin, you have a .5 probability of getting a heads and a .5 probability of getting a tails. But what causes a specific outcome to any given trial? Is it really random or are there forces influencing the outcome which we are not perceptive of? I assert, without any real evidence or proof :-), that spirit is capable of exerting a tangible force to affect the material world, tweaking physical outcomes as desired.
A second way spirit influences the material world is by acting through humans themselves. The human nervous system is susceptible to being “hacked” by spirit. In fact that is the very foundation of the concept of incarnation and spirit possession. Spirit can influence thought, emotion and behavior.
Since coming to this conclusion I have been exposed to TWO THEORIES OF DESTINY.
THEORY 1
During a conversation with my Qigong Instructor Dan Ferrera and a couple of his advanced students the idea was expressed that humans have nodes of free will during the course of their lives. They can make certain major decisions in their lives but once a course it set, events are determined until the next node of free will is encountered.
THEORY 2
Theory 2 is about the exact opposite of theory one. It comes from the book “Journey of Souls: A Case Study of Life Between Lives” by Michael Newton PhD. This book expresses the idea that the major events and circumstances of your life are predetermined and it is the way you react and respond to them which is up to you. Learning and growth takes place as you become more aware of your emotional states and possible courses of action and exert a greater level of control over your responses. Over time you grow in “Response Ability.”
I personally tend to think this second theory is correct.
CONCLUSION
The possible existence of destiny should not be taken as an excuse to lay on the couch all day doing nothing. Your growth in self-awareness and ability to respond appropriately to the challenges and obstacles faced in life are important to the spiritual growth of your soul over the course of multiple incarnations.
